Er leitet daraus Veränderungsmuster ab, die Zusammenhänge aufzeigen und bis zu einem gewissen Maß Prognosen ermöglichen. Insbesondere stellt der Autor den Zusammenhang zwischen Einstellungen auf individueller Ebene und der Entwicklung und dem Fortbestehen demokratischer Institutionen auf der gesellschaftlichen Ebene her. Basis der Analyse ist eine einzigartige Datenbank: der World-Value-Survey, der zum ersten Mal Daten aus 43 Gesellschaften erfaßt hat - etablierten Demokratien mit Marktwirtschaften ebenso wie autoritären oder ehemals sozialistischen Staaten.
