«Le Monde est rond» est le plus célèbre des livres de Gertrude Stein à destination des enfants. Initialement paru en 1939, il est actuellement épuisé dans sa version intégrale en français. Après la découverte du «Livre de lecture», les éditions Cambourakis poursuivent donc leur travail de redécouverte de textes majeurs de Gertrude Stein, servie par une nouvelle traduction de Martin Richet et des illustrations d'Alice Lorenzi, qui avaient déjà travaillé sur le précédent volume. On y suit les tribulations de deux enfants, Rose et Willie, en quête d'identité au milieu d'une faune et d'une flore luxuriante. Der erste Abschnitt des in vier Teile von jeweils mehreren hundert Seiten gegliederten Buches ist noch vergleichsweise herkömmlich erzählt; er berichtet von den Vorfahren jener vier Amerikaner einer bestimmten Generation, die in den folgenden Abschnitten Anlaß und Ausgangspunkt für die spezifisch neue Art der Beschreibung von Personen, deren Natur und Beziehung zueinander sind. Die Sprache des Buches ist artifiziell und hochstilisiert, dabei aber im Wortschatz fast reduziert auf eine Art basic English, dem durch die endlosen Variationen und Wiederholungen von Sätzen und in sich zurücklaufenden Satzmustern alle lautlichen Reize und semantischen Möglichkeiten abgewonnen werden; die Einfachheit des Vokabulars muß als eine Reaktion gegen die Affektation, gegen den ästhetischen Charakter der Generation der Symbolisten gesehen werden (D.-H. Kahnweiler).
