Rita Dove, 1952 in Akron, Ohio, geboren, ist die führende afroamerikanische Lyrikerin ihrer Generation. Sie hat bisher vier Lyrikbände und eine Kurzgeschichtensammlung publiziert. Die Autorin, die an der Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, Anglistik, Germanistik und Chello studierte, sich dann Mitte der siebziger Jahre ein Jahr lang an der Universität Tübingen auf das Studium deutscher Literatur konzentrierte und anschließend an der University of Iowa die Lehrberechtigung in Creative Writing erwarb, erhielt zahlreiche Preise und Stipendien für ihr literarisches Werk. Internationale Beachtung erfuhr sie durch die 1987 erfolgte Verleihung des bedeutendsten nordamerikanischen Literaturpreises, des Pulitzer-Preises, für ihren Lyrikband Thomas and Beulah. Ihre Lyrik zeichnet sich aus durch außergewöhnliche Präzision und Sinnlichkeit, durch das Fehlen schriller Töne und jeglicher Sentimentalität.
