Jerome Rothenberg (*1931 in New York) zählt als Lyriker und Essayist, Übersetzer und Herausgeber sowie Literaturwissenschaftler und Dozent zu den bedeutendsten US-amerikanischen Kulturschaffenden und -vermittlern der Gegenwart. Zahlreiche Publikationen seit Ende der 50er Jahre. Seine Arbeit schließt dabei die Pflege der historischen Avantgarden ebenso ein wie die Erforschung frühester Schriftzeugnisse jüdischer Dichtung oder der mündlichen Poesie amerikanischer Ureinwohner sowie anderer Weltteile. Ein zentraler Begriff in seinem Werk ist die »Grand Collage« (R. Duncan); eine Dichtung, in der Zeiten und Völker gleichberechtigt miteinander kommunizieren. Rothenberg prägte gemeinsam mit anderen Autoren dafür den Ausdruck der Ethnopoesie, einer den Brückenschlag zwischen den Kulturen suchenden Interdisziplin.

In einer Vorbemerkung schreibt er: »Die Abwesenheit der Lebenden schien ein Vakuum zu schaffen, in dem die Toten – die Dibbiks, die vor ihrer Zeit starben – frei sprechen konnten … Holocaust … war ein Wort das mir immer unangenehm war: zu christlich, zu hübsch, zu sehr abstellend auf ein ›Opfer‹, das ich nicht verstand und auch heute nicht verstehe. Das Wort, das wir dafür benutzten, war das jiddische khurbn (khurban), & das war auch das Wort, das ich nach Polen mitgenommen hatte … Die Gedichte, die mir zuerst in Treblinka zu Ohren kamen, waren die deutlichste Botschaft, die ich je bekommen habe, warum ich Gedichte schreibe. Sie sind auch eine Antwort auf die Vorstellung – von Adorno und anderen – daß man nach Auschwitz keine Gedichte mehr schreiben könne oder solle.«

Barbaric Vast & Wild is a continuation and a possible culmination of the project that began with Jerome Rothenberg's Technicians of the Sacred in 1968 and led to the first four volumes of Poems for the Millennium in the 1990s and 2000s. Combining two works written over the same time period Concealments and Caprichos is a two-pronged follow up to Rothenberg's earlier book of poems, A Book of Witness. As Rothenberg states in his preface, the title is based on a Jewish mystical work, Sifra diSeni'uta from which he drew the lines that open this title. Those lines appear sporadically throughout Concealments, not as the mapping of a nonexistent god, but as an intimation, in both Concealments and Caprichos, of an imagined world embedded in the real one.
