In Africa crossbreeding programmes for sheep and goats have in most cases been initiated, designed and implemented with the assistance of international donors. Despite the short-term production increase through the introduction of new breeds to the tropics most breeding programmes lack financial and institutional sustainability in the long term. Numerous studies have emphasized on the importance of the different parts of a breeding programme: breeding objective, selection strategy, recording scheme, breeding strategy, breeding scheme. However, most livestock breeding programmes in the tropics realise only parts of a breeding programme. The publication presents a case study on a smallholder breeding organisation for dairy goats in Kenya – the Dairy Goat Association of Kenya (DGAK). The production conditions as well as the socio-economic factors contributing to its success after ten years of breeding are analysed and compared with similar projects in Burundi, Ethiopia and Malawi. The results include the analysis of performance paramters of the crossbred goats of different breeding levels and a cost-benefit-analysis of the dairy goat enterprise. Based on these results a young bucks selection scheme with an open nucleus is designed considering the specific production and organisational conditions of smallholders in the Kenyan Highlands.

Robert Menasses Romane Sinnliche Gewißheit (1988; 1996), Selige Zeiten, brüchige Welt (1991) und Schubumkehr (1995) sowie der beigegebene Essay über die Phänomenologie der Entgeisterung (1991; 1995) bilden zusammen die sogenannte Trilogie der Entgeisterung. Die Annahme dieses Zusammenhangs dezidiert nachzuweisen und in seiner konzeptionellen Bedeutung zu analysieren, beschreibt das eigentliche Anliegen dieser Untersuchung. Sie stellt damit zugleich die erste umfassende Auseinandersetzung mit Menasses Romantrilogie überhaupt dar. Im Ergebnis wird sich die Trilogie der Entgeisterung als ein Werk erweisen, das – ausgehend vom modernen Totalitätsanspruch des Romans – eine neue, post-moderne Möglichkeitsform des (totalen) Romans vorzustellen sucht und in dieser Gestalt auch einen (post-modernen) Beitrag zur Theorie des Romans leistet. Um diese Hauptthese vorzuführen und plausibel zu machen, konzentriert sich die Arbeit im Fortgang ihrer Argumentation insbesondere auf die Darstellung der intertextuellen Bezüge, durch die vor allem auf den Kontext der klassischen Moderne referiert wird, sowie auf die Darlegung der allegorischen Bedeutungsebene der zentralen Romangestalten, aus der sich auch die poetologische Konzeption des Textes herleiten läßt.
