Slavná francouzská medievistka Marie-Madeleine Davy (1903-1998) ve své knize Románská symbolika zkoumá úlohu symbolů v románském umění a role symboliky v životě člověka 12. století. V širokém rozpětí od mystických textů, přes architekturu až po grálovou literaturu autorka přibližuje duchovní zkušenost tehdejšího člověka, která je symboly živena. Symboly vyučují jazyku, který je jazykem lásky a poznání a jsou tedy v této době alfou a omegou duchovní zkušenosti, ba dokonce tvoří celou abecedu tohoto tajemného jazyka, přirovnávaného k jazyku andělů. "Symbolika není pouhým jazykem, stává se řečí proměňující zemi stínů v zemi světla, tj. v proměněnou zemi. Symbol představuje práh. Prahů pak je několik, až se dojde k poslednímu prahu, jenž ústí v Poznání. Poznání ve své plnosti už pak nevyžaduje přítomnost znamení. Transfigurace je výše než znamení. Románský člověk se však považuje za poutníka, on symboly potřebuje. Ony představují úseky jeho cesty. Když zapomene na smysl své vize, je zde románský kostel, který mu připomíná tajemství těchto setkání. Vesmír se stává zrcadlem, v němž může číst proporce a míry uvnitř neporušitelného řádu."
