Dan wurde im Nordosten von New Jersey geboren und wuchs dort auf. Nach seinem Studium der Landschaftsarchitektur wurde er jahrelang Schlagzeuger in einer Rockabilly/Punk-Band, mit der er auch ein Jahr in London lebte und spielte. Nach dem Ende der Band reiste er nach Israel, um die Bibel zu studieren und die Gültigkeit des Christentums zu erforschen. Zurück in Santa Cruz engagierte er sich stark in der Gemeindearbeit und schloss schließlich sein Studium am Multnomah Seminary mit einem Zertifikat in Bibelstudien ab. Nach acht Jahren als Jugendpastor in Santa Cruz gründete er gemeinsam mit anderen die Gottesdienst- und Gebetsgruppe "Graceland", die sich zu einer Anlaufstelle für junge Erwachsene und alle Altersgruppen entwickelte. Später war er Teil des Gründungsteams der Vintage Faith Church, wo er nun als leitender Pastor lehrt und für die missionarischen Aspekte zuständig ist. Er verfolgt zudem ein Doktoratsstudium und lehrt als Dozent.
