    • This thesis focuses on the dynamics of autonomous Boolean networks, on the basis of Boolean logic functions in continuous time without external clocking. These networks are realized with integrated circuits on an electronic chip as a field programmable gate array (FPGA) with roughly 100,000 logic gates, offering an extremely flexible model system. It allows fast and cheap design cycles and large networks with arbitrary topologies and coupling delays. The author presents pioneering results on theoretical modeling, experimental realization, and selected applications. In this regard, three classes of novel dynamic behavior are investigated: (i) Chaotic Boolean networks are proposed as high-speed physical random number generators with high bit rates. (ii) Networks of periodic Boolean oscillators are home to long-living transient chimera states, i.e., novel patterns of coexisting domains of spatially coherent (synchronized) and incoherent (desynchronized) dynamics. (iii) Excitable networks exhibit cluster synchronization and can be used as fast artificial Boolean neurons whose spiking patterns can be controlled. This work presents the first experimental platform for large complex networks, which will facilitate exciting future developments.

    • The idea of making a fake rhino horn is being attempted, but, at the time in which this book is set, it was a pipe dream. The procurement of a real rhino horn and a sample of blood was/isnecessary for DNA synthesis. The chase across Central Africa is an integral part of thestory. Interpol are always one step behind. There is a huge demand for rhino horn (and elephant ivory) in the Middle and Far East due to the misconception that the horn hasaphrodisiac and medicinal properties. All the characters are fictional, though some may bear a passing likeness to friends in Europe, Africa and the Far East.

    • Without a shot being fired, any country with a little know-how could cripple the world economy by spreading a virus. A century ago, the Spanish influenza caused millions of deaths in over two years. COVID-19 has spread much more rapidly thanks to air travel. The big question is: was it manufactured and released, was it a mistake like SARS, or was it caused by animals? COVID-19 first appeared in Wuhan, Central China, at the start of December 2019 but was kept a secret until a young ophthalmologist wrote about it on the last day of that year. He was held for spreading lies and sadly died of the disease. The finger of suspicion points to China. This book written in March 2020 is fiction but was eminently possible. At the time of writing, I was unaware that virology laboratories or an animal market even existed in Wuhan. Many eminent people have warned us of the dangers of pandemics over the past decade but no one was prepared, except perhaps the perpetrators. It has been a pandemic across the world and will have lasting repercussions. Anyone or anything might have caused it, but the question on everyone’s lips is: ‘who did’?
