Gubby, a fisherman, and his cat Puss take his fishing boat, the Flounder, on a journey that takes them up the west coast of British Columbia and then out to sea, as they encounter storms, fog, whales, and a shark as they fish for salmon.

Gubby, a salmon fisherman whose boat is worn out after a long season, commissions his friend, a Japanese-Canadian boat builder, to construct a new one.
