    • Friedrich Schillers vorletztes vollendetes Drama 'Die Braut von Messina oder Die feindlichen Brüder' (Uraufführung 1803), erzählt eine frei erfundene Handlung um eine fluchbeladene Familie, deren Schicksal sich unwiderruflich erfüllt. Durch den Einsatz von musikalisch unterstützten Chören, die die Handlung kommentieren und auch aktiv in sie eingreifen bekommt das in Versen verfasste „Trauerspiel“ die Struktur einer antiken Tragödie - in der Vorrede „Über den Gebrauch des Chors in der Tragödie“ erläutert Schiller seine Absicht, die „moderne gemeine Welt in die alte poetische“ zu verwandeln. Die Geschichte ist eine antikisch anmutende, ins mittelalterliche Messina gelegte dramatische Begebenheit: Don Cesar und Don Manuel lieben ihre Schwester Beatrice, deren wahre Identität ihnen unbekannt ist. Sie geraten in eine heftige Auseinandersetzung, die mit der Ermordung Don Manuels durch Don Cesar und dessen Selbsttötung endet. Mit Anmerkungen, Literaturhinweisen und Nachwort hrsg. von Matthias Luserke-Jaqui.
