    John Banim war ein irischer Romanautor, Novellist, Dramatiker, Dichter und Essayist, der manchmal als der „Scott Irlands“ bezeichnet wurde. Bevor er sich der Literatur widmete, studierte er Kunst und arbeitete als Maler von Miniaturen und Porträts sowie als Zeichenlehrer. Gemeinsam mit seinem Bruder Michael schrieb er auch unter dem Pseudonym The O'Hara Family. Sein Werk gilt als bedeutender Beitrag zur irischen Literatur.
