Christian Karl Josias von Bunsen (1791-1860) war preußischer Diplomat. Er war Botschafter beim Heiligen Stuhl in Rom und Gesandter in London. Bunsen gehörte zu den Mitbegründern des Deutschen Archäologischen Instituts in Rom. Ein angeborener religiöser Sinn hatte ihn frühzeitig angeregt, sich mit der Kirchengeschichte im weitesten Sinne, insbesondere mit der Geschichte des Christenthums in seinen frühesten Epochen auf das Genaueste vertraut zu machen. Bunsen ist ein strenggläubiger protestantischer Christ, und wenn er in der Auffassung der christlichen Lehre den dogmatischen Gehalt derselben stärker betont, als den ethischen, rein menschlichen, so entspringt diese Richtung aus seiner ganzen Individualität, welche von seiner frühesten Entwickelung an entschieden den Charakter einer stark ausgeprägten subjectiv - religiösen Innigkeit bekundet. Vom Werk selbst aber gehört nichts dem Herausgeber. [...] Es gilt namentlich in Bezug auf den interessantesten Theil des Ganzen, das "Leben Jesu", welcher so ganz Eigenthum des Verfassers ist, daß wir es fast als eine Arbeit bezeichnen können, welche denselben während seines ganzen Lebens begleitet hat und auch in seiner jetzigen theilweisen Unvollendung die Seiten darstellt, nach welchen derselbe bis zuletzt nicht mit sich abgeschlossen hat und ein Mann der Sehnsucht geblieben ist."
