When Veronica accidentally got pregnant by her husband, the next time she saw her hairdresser, who also happened to be a regular client, she told him that she was going to stop being a prostitute. “Good,” he said. “Thank God. Y’know I always thought that you were too good to be a prostitute. You’re a nice girl, you’re smart, and you’re pretty. You shouldn’t lead a life like that. I’m glad you’re not going to be a prostitute anymore.” Two months later after Veronica miscarried, she was in the hairdresser’s shop and said to him, “I’m thinking about getting back into prostitution.” “Are you available Thursday night?” was his only question.

Tibet? said Peter leaving Athena the open road to discuss any of her interests related to going to Tibet. She spoke about healing and Tibetan medicine and right as she finished Peter started with, When we were in India... and then launched into an anecdote that tangentially related to Athenas upcoming trip. I think that all of us wanted to address Athena not because we wanted to say or hear anything in particular, but because we wanted the right to glance at her exquisite body. She was wearing a black bikini and her 19 year-old well-oiled sprawling swimmers shoulders, captivating breasts, thin waist, and sultry legs were one of the most beautiful sights that any of us jaded and withered 29 year-old intellectuals had seen in years. Im sorry that I cant describe it more in some Death in Venice-Tadzio-swooping-down-to-pick-up-the-ball-on-the-beach-as-the-sun-glistened-off-his-back way but I just cant.Shes 19, shes the youth of eternal summers, shes the sparkle in our collective eyes, shes like drinking rain water off a spring pond, sipping champagne by moonlight, she embodies the pure tide of adolescence, shes both Juliet and Lolita incarnate, her smile could launch a thousand bad similes... Shes fucking beautiful. Get the picture? And shes smart too.

Handgrenade Talk is a commentary on the efficacy of popular communication and the sensationalization of sex and violence in the media. The title suggests that some people – like handgrenades – are infinitely better at talking than at listening. A handgrenade hears nothing. If you listen closely to many conversations today, you may hear two monologues rather than one dialogue.

Originally I wanted to call this book Prostitution and Gambling in the Animal Kingdom or Selective Listening for Litigation Purposes, but I discovered that Clifford Geertz was working on a study with a similar title to the former and Alan Dershowitz had already implicitly written the latter. Also, I decided that Superficial is not really a book because it's superficial and books should be profound. In this , which isn't a book, there are no chapters, no sections, no paragraphs, no murders, and very few sentences. Thus, by no stretch of my unimpaired imagination is it a book. However, it is many pages assembled as temporally accurate as possible, which convey the thoughts of fourteen of the fifteen guests at Jamie Schliessman's cocktail party.
