Als Comenius seine pädagogische Hauptschrift im Jahr 1657 veröffentlicht, liegen große Teile Europas in Trümmern. Die Einheit der abendländischen Christenheit ist zerfallen, die theologischen Dogmen haben nicht mehr die Kraft, Klarheit in der Welt zu stiften. Nur einen Weg sieht Comenius, die Menschen zur Vernunft und an die Schwelle der Seligkeit zu bringen: das gesamte überlieferte Wissen so zu organisieren, dass es sich von jedem aneignen lässt. Comenius versucht zu beweisen, wie die gesamte Welt der Dinge und Ereignisse sich dem menschlichen Geist anmessen lässt. Alles Wissen von allen Missverständnissen, Irrtümern und Nachlässigkeiten zu befreien und ihm die Gestalt eines geläuterten Systems zu geben: das ist Comenius große Vision.
