John Vikla, born in 1871, was the son of Czech pioneers and grew up in Wheatland Township, Lonsdale, Minnesota. He was a farmer, an elementary school teacher, a Justice of the Peace, and sold nursery stock to other pioneer families to help his family pay for their land. In 1917, he won a prize for developing the best Minnesota plum.
