Die Autorin: Andrea Kettenmann, 1959 geboren, studierte Kunstgeschichte in Gießen, Göttingen und Heidelberg und arbeitete anschließend am Kunstgeschichtlichen Seminar der Universität Hamburg. 1986 ging sie als Stipendiatin nach Mexiko, wo sie auch heute noch lebt und als freiberufliche Kunsthistorikern tätig ist. Sie hat an zahlreichen Ausstellungen und Katalogen mitgearbeitet.
Diego Rivera (1886–1957) ist eine lebenspralle, lautstarke Erscheinung auf der kunsthistorischen Bühne. Sein Leben war geprägt von politischem Kampf und turbulenten Liebschaften, er war Ehemann und Förderer von Frida Kahlo, Befürworter und Gegner von Stalins Sowjetunion sowie Befreier und Verräter für Leo Trotzki. Riveras Gemälde – lebendig, explizit und oft monumental – verströmen dieselbe politische und persönliche Passion wie seine Biografie. Durch die Fusion von europäischen Einflüssen wie dem Kubismus, einer sozialistischen Ideologie und mexikanischer Folklore schuf er für sein Land eine völlig neue, in der Kunstgeschichte einzigartige Bildsprache. Er wurde zu einem der wichtigsten Vertreter des mexikanischen Muralismo und erhielt internationale Anerkennung für seine öffentlichen Wandmalereien, in denen er eine utopische, aber zugängliche Vision von einem postrevolutionären Mexiko präsentierte. 1931 galt die insgesamt erst zweite monografische Ausstellung des MoMA seinem Werk. Dieses Buch erkundet die eigenwillige Mischung aus stilistischen und ideologischen Einflüssen, die Rivera so einzigartig machte. The Mexican artist Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) is one of the most important 20th century painters, and one of the few Latin American artists to have achieved a global reputation. Diego Rivera - A revolutionary and troublemaker It was as a revolutionary and troublemaker that Picasso, Dalí and André Breton described the husband of Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, but he was also responsible for creating a public art that was both highly advanced and profoundly accessible. From 1910 Rivera lived in Europe where he absorbed the influence of Cubism. After the Mexican revolution, however, he returned to his homeland and harnessed the lessons of the European avant-garde to the needs of the Mexican people. His own murals, and those of the Mexican Muralists who followed his example, presented a utopian vision of a post-revolutionary Mexico. Rivera’s historical paintings expressed his interpretation of the revolution and its ideals, in a style that showed him returning to the pre-Columbian roots of Mexican culture, re-inventing a colourfully realistic visual idiom that could appeal directly to a largely illiterate people. Slavná mexická umělkyně Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) je jedna z mála latinskoamerických malířek, kterým se podařilo dobýt mezinárodní věhlas. Byla dcerou německého imigranta a Mexičanky indiánského původu. Její život a dílo jsou protkány více než u kteréhokoli jiného umělce a zásadní význam měly v jejím životě dvě události. V osmnácti letech se po nehodě autobusu strávila s vážným úrazem rok v nemocnici, kde se poprvé pokusila malovat. V jednadvaceti letech se provdala za světoznámého mexického umělce Diega Riveru. Následky úrazu trpěla celý život a obzvláště těžce nesla, že nemůže mít děti.
Frida Kahlo mala život rovnako pestrý a drsný ako sú jej obrazy. Odráža sa v nich všetko – tragická nehoda v mladosti, ktorá z nej urobila celoživotného invalida, kubizmus maliarskych začiatkov i naivné umenie v kombinácí so surealizmom vyzretejšieho obdobia. Nezanedbateľný je aj vplyv jej manžela maliara Diega Riveru a génov, ktoré jej predala kreolská matka a otec – maďarský Nemec židovského pôvodu. Počas svojho života namaľovala Frida Kahlo približne 200 obrazov – najlepšie z nich predstavuje táto publikácia.
