Berthold Auerbach war ein deutsch-jüdischer Dichter und Autor, der als Begründer des „Tendenzromans“ gilt. Dieser literarische Ansatz nutzte Fiktion als Mittel zur Beeinflussung der öffentlichen Meinung zu sozialen, politischen, moralischen und religiösen Fragen. Auerbachs Werk verdeutlicht die Kraft der Erzählung, gesellschaftliche Diskurse zu beleben und zu beeinflussen, was ihn zu einer bedeutenden Figur der deutschen Literatur macht.
Spinozas Kurze Abhandlung gilt als früher Grundriß seines Hauptwerkes, der Ethik. Etwa 1660 entstanden, ist diese Schrift durch eine niederländische Übersetzung aus seinem Freundeskreis erhalten. Neben der eigenständigen Bedeutung, die dem Text zukommt, werden hier wesentliche Hinweise auf die Quellen und Problemstellungen gegeben, an die Spinoza anknüpft und an denen sich sein Denken entzündet.

Der Dichter aus Nordstetten bei Horb wandte sich an ein breites Publikum. Auerbach ließ die unverwechselbaren Charaktere einer Dorfgemeinschaft lebendig werden und beschrieb ihr Schicksal, ohne das soziale Umfeld seiner Zeit zu vernachlässigen. Rainer Moritz macht einige der schönsten Dorfgeschichten Auerbachs wieder zugänglich und lädt dazu ein, einen zu Unrecht in Vergessenheit geratenen Erzähler wiederzuentdecken.
Die Geschwister Amrei und Dami, Kinder eines armen Holzfällers, wachsen nach dem Tode der Eltern in getrennten Häusern eines Schwarzwalddorfes auf. Amrei wächst zu einem lebensfrohen und tüchtigen Mädchen heran, während Dami in Selbstmitleid vergeht und schließlich nach Amerika auswandert. Auf einer Hochzeit lernt Amrei einen reichen Bauernsohn kennen, dessen Frau sie schließlich wird und so ihren Bruder aus Amerika zurück auf den Hof holen kann.
