Over the past 15 years, advanced European integration has pursued a complex secular and cosmopolitan agenda. However, this evolution has coincided with the rise of hard-line populist movements that starkly oppose the ideals of a harmonious European Union. Led by figures like Jean-Marie Le Pen of France's National Front, these radical movements have gained influence and are concerning due to their philosophical ties to fascism and national socialism. In his analysis, anthropologist Douglas Holmes argues that these movements are rooted in integralism, a mindset that, in its benign form, allows individuals to maintain ethnic identity within a pluralistic society. However, when taken to extremes by figures like Le Pen, integralism exacerbates feelings of alienation and powerlessness stemming from impersonal, transnational "fast-capitalism." This leads to a politics of exclusion, fostering cultural nationalism, racism, and social disorder. Holmes's multi-sited ethnography spans northern Italy, Strasbourg, Brussels, and the East End of London, offering critical insights into integralism as both an intimate cultural practice and a violent expression of estrangement. Combining extensive scholarship with two years of field research, including interviews with right-wing activists, this work provides a compelling and sobering examination of one of modern Europe's most troubling political trends.
