Die Forschungsgruppe hat sich, nach einer längeren Vorbereitungsphase, einige Wochen in Marienthal aufgehalten. Das dort gesammelte Material (Ergebnisse von Interviews, Berichte von Betroffenen und Gemeindefunktionären, Tagebuchnotizen, Briefe, Beobachtungsprotokolle, statistische Daten) wurde in gemeinsamen Arbeitssitzungen der Forscher gesichtet, ausgewertet, analysiert. So entstand schließlich ein im großen und ganzen paradigmatisches Untersuchungsbild von konzentrierter Arbeitslosigkeit, ihren wirtschaftlichen, psychischen und sozialen Folgephänomenen, dessen Hauptmerkmale nach wie vor aufschlußreich sind für empirische Sozialforschung auf diesem Feld.
