Im Zentrum von Band 6 steht Brechts Theaterstück Der Untergang des Egoisten Johann Fatzer . Bei kaum einem anderen Projekt gestaltete sich der Schreibprozess derart komplex. Alles geriet, eben erst entworfen, wieder in Bewegung: die Akteure (Kriegsheimkehrer oder Deserteure), Zeit und Kontext der Handlung (im oder nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg, Hoffen auf die Revolution oder krumme Geschäfte im Schwarzhandel), Poetologie (Handlungsdramatik, Lehrstück oder »Sex-Stück«). Einige Motive sprangen in den Notizbüchern auf andere Projekte über und umgekehrt, so bei Brechts pornografischer Gedichtsammlung Augsburger Sonette oder seinem Aufruf für den Schriftsteller Henri Guilbeaux, der in Frankreich wegen seiner pazifistischen Haltung verurteilt worden war. Der neue Band rekonstruiert erstmals zuverlässig die fünfjährige Arbeit an Fatzer und dokumentiert dessen Schlüsselstellung für Brechts Entwicklung als Dramatiker .

Ryszard Krynicki pokazuje w swoim wyborze Brechta jako znakomitego, a chwilami wielkiego liryka, mistrza krótkiej formy, nawiązującego do poezji chińskiej w taki sposób, że nigdy nie wiemy, czy odnosi się do rzeczywistych postaci, czy raczej chodzi o mistyfikację. Pokazuje go także jako poetę politycznego – który, trzeba koniecznie dodać, okazuje się dzisiaj bardziej może aktualny niż przed czterdziestu laty, kiedy te przekłady powstawały.

Brecht was never inclined to see any of his plays as completely finished, and this volume collects some of the most important theatrical projects and fragments that were always to remain 'works in progress'.
