Rozsáhlá monografie předního anglického medievalisty sleduje vznik heretického hnutí a myšlení ve středověké křesťanské Evropě. Stěžejní část knihy představuje analýza rozvoje valdenství a katarství v západoevropském prostředí s důrazem na jejich střet s katolickou církví. Druhá polovina knihy je věnována rozboru pozdně středověkých heretických hnutí – viklefismus, lollardi, bekyně, sekta svobodného ducha a husitská reformace. Lambert podrobně sleduje nejen teologický obsah a společenský dosah jednotlivých herezí, ale i postavení heretika, člověka na okraji společnosti, člověka žijícího v uzavřeném ghettu, nuceného prožívat i nám důvěrně známý život dvojí morálky. Hereze v Lambertově pojetí reprezentuje alternativní středověký svět, který existoval po několik století vedle oficiální církve a jejího učení.
