Len Platt charts a fresh approach through one of the great masterpieces of twentieth-century literature. Using original archival research and detailed close readings, he outlines Joyce's literary response to the racial discourse of twentieth-century politics. Platt's account is the first to position Finnegans Wake in precise historical conditions and to explore Joyce's engagement with European fascism. Race, Platt claims, is a central theme for Joyce, both in terms of the colonial and post-colonial conflicts between the Irish and the British, and in terms of its use by the extreme right. It is in this context that Joyce's engagement with race, while certainly a product of colonial relations, also figures as a wider disputation with rationalism, capitalism and modernity.

Wolfgang Hildesheimer rühmte, dass dieses Buch eine der höchsten Möglichkeiten von Literatur überhaupt verkörpere. Es galt seit seinem Erscheinen im Jahre 1941 als unübersetzbar. Joyce hat 17 Jahre lang an seinem Hauptwerk gearbeitet, jedes einzelne Wort wird als Herausforderung angesehen, und selbst im heimischen Irland ist die Dechiffrierarbeit an „Finnegans Wake“ nicht abgeschlossen. Finnegan lockte die größten Wortathleten wie ein unbestiegener Achttausender die Messners dieser Welt. Hans Wollschläger und Wolfgang Hildesheimer wollten den Gipfel besteigen, scheiterten aber an Sauerstoffmangel und an an der Maschine festgefrorenen Fingern. Arno Schmidt nannte das Werk einen einzigen großen Unterleibswitz. Als Schmidt eine Übersetzung von „Finnegans Wake“ anbot, wollte kein Verlag anbeißen. Als Sensation feierte der Bayerische Rundfunk denn auch, dass Dieter H. Stündel nach ebenfalls 17-jähriger Arbeit die Übersetzung von „Finnegans Wake“ vorlegte. Stündel ist Schmidt-Alumnus, er ist der Autor eines Registers zu „Zettels Traum“ und übersetzte vorher Werke von hohem Schwierigkeitsgrad, z. B. Lewis Carolls „Alice in Wonderland“. 10 Jahre brauchte Übersetzer Stündel, um das Buch erst einmal zu begreifen. Denn die Mythen und Religionen der Welt, die Geschichte der Menschheit von der Antike bis Napoleon, all das hat Joyce in seinem letzten Buch in Wortspielereien verwoben - mit Wörtern aus 22 Sprachen. Mitte der 80er Jahre war es soweit: Der Inhalt war entschlüsselt. Stündel machte sich an die eigentliche Übersetzungsarbeit des Mammut-Werkes. Darüber, dass ‚Finnegans Wake‘ ein bedeutendes Werk des grotesken Humors ist, herrscht weitgehend Einigkeit, Und das heißt: den Kalauer zur Kunstform zu erheben, ein Feuerwerk von Sprachspielen abzubrennen, Wörter zu verdrehen und zu kreuzen, bis sie mehrere Bedeutungen annehmen. 50.000 neue Vokabeln hat Stündel für seinen „Finnegans Wehg“ (so der deutsche Titel) erfunden. Joyce hat sich hier ausgetobt, was sein Wissen anbelangt, so Übersetzer Stündel, für den ‚Finnegans Wake‘ auch eine vor Erotik triefende Auferstehungsgeschichte mit viel Whiskey ist. Hauptsache für Stündel aber bleibt: Es ist viel Spaß in ‚Finnegans Wake‘. Fritz Senn, der Leiter des Zürcher Joyce-Archives, würdigte Stündels Arbeit als kleines Wunder und als imponierendes Werk.
