Anfang Februar 1774 begann Goethe mit der Niederschrift des \"Werther\". Bereits im April schloss er die Arbeit daran ab und schrieb darüber am 26. April 1774 an Lavater: \"Du wirst großen Teil nehmen an den Leiden des lieben Jungen, den ich darstelle. Wir gingen nebeneinander an die sechs Jahre, ohne uns zu nähern. Und nun hab' ich seiner Geschichte meine Empfindungen geliehen, und so macht's ein wunderbares Ganzes.\" Wie bahnbrechend Goethes Roman zu seiner Zeit war, wird uns beim Lesen von \"Die Leiden des jungen Werther\" kaum bewusst. Hier werden \"lebendige Bilder aus dem bürgerlichen Leben mit der Geschichte einer Seele verbunden\" (E. Trunz), das ist gegenüber den vorangegangenen Briefromanen (Rousseau) neu. Zudem haben wir es hier nur mit einem Briefschreiber zu tun. Durch \"Werther\"\" ist der neuzeitliche deutsche Roman eigentlich erst geschaffen. Der Anhang enthält ein Nachwort zum \" Werther\" sowie eine Reihe Briefe, die sich mit dem Werk befassen. Außerdem werden Leitfragen zur Auseinandersetzung mit dem Roman gestellt, dazu Erläuterungen für den Schüler gegeben.
