Before Caleb Carr and Laurie R. King, Carole Nelson Douglas gave readers a compelling look into Victoriana with a bold new detective Irene Adler, the only woman to ever outwit Sherlock Holmes. An operatic diva and the intellectual equal of most of the men she encounters, Irene is as much at home with disguises and a revolver as with high society and haute couture.Chapel Noir is the fifth book in Carole Nelson Douglas's critically acclaimed Irene Adler series, which reinvents "the woman" that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle introduced in "A Scandal in Bohemia" as the heroine of her own extravagant adventures. This time readers are thrust into one of the darkest periods of criminal fact and fiction when two courtesans are found brutally slaughtered in the lavish boudoir of a Paris house. No woman should ever see such horrors, authorities declare, but a powerful sponsor has insisted that Irene investigate the case, along with her faithful companion, sheltered parson's daughter Penelope Huxleigh. But does anyone really seek the truth, or do they wish only to bury it with the dead women--for there is a worse horror that will draw Irene and her archrival, Sherlock Holmes, into a duel of wits with a fiendish opponent. These Paris killings mimic a series of gruesome murders that terrorized London only months before, in a dangerous and disreputable part of town known as Whitechapel...

Forgotten for decades in a dusty trunk, this work brings back the unmistakable voice of Margaret Wise Brown, allowing a new generation of children to discover and cherish her artistry. Never before published, it shines a light on children worldwide, from "a Dutch boy dreams" to "across the sea in the Far, Far East," echoing the familiar lines: "I see the Moon And the Moon sees me. God bless the Moon, And God bless me." Brown, a pioneer of children's literature, wrote stories that resonated with children rather than adults. She is best known for classics like Good Night Moon and Runaway Bunny, which remain best-sellers. At the height of her career, she had over 100 books in print, but her untimely death left many manuscripts forgotten in a cedar trunk. This work was rescued from that trunk. Illustrator Linda Bleck began her artistic journey as a child, drawing on blueprint paper and later assisting her mother, a freelance illustrator. Her work has appeared in notable publications, and she is also known for the "Pepper the Dog" series. This manuscript, published 56 years after Brown's death, was discovered in a Vermont barn, yellowed and rusted. Publisher Laura Minchew took on the challenge to complete it, crafting a bedtime classic that serves as a prayer for God's blessing on all children.

When Beatrix Potter wrote and illustrated "The Tale of Peter Rabbit, " she had little idea how popular this story and the 22 which followed it would immediately become. Each of the 23 "Tales" has reprinted over 100 times, and in the 80 or so years since their initial publication, much of the delicate brushwork and detail has disappeared from the pictures. To remedy this, Frederick Warne has located Beatrix Potter's original artwork, and photographed it to produce these wonderful new edition of her stories. Thanks to modern printing techniques, her illustrations appear just as freshly as when they were first painted, and confirm Beatrix Potter's place as the most celebrated children's artist of the century.
