Er heiratet die Gutserbin Caroline von Briest und lebt mit ihr auf Schloss Nennhausen im Havelland, wo beide sich der Schriftstellerei widmen. Längst ein angesehener Dichter führt ihn sein Patriotismus 1812 zurück in die Armee und er nimmt an den Befreiungskriegen teil. 1815 nimmt er als Major seinen endgültigen Abschied und kehrt zurück nach Nennhausen. 1831 stirbt Caroline, 1833 heiratet er ein drittes Mal und übersiedelt nach Halle an der Saale. Mit Friedrich de La Motte Fouqué stirbt am 23. Januar 1843 einer der ersten deutschen Dichter der Romantik.
