Friedrich von Gentz Bücher

Gentz, als konservativer Gegenspieler der Französischen Revolution und Mitarbeiter Metternichs, prägte die Geschichte während des Wiener Kongresses und der Karlsbader Beschlüsse. Zwischen 1791 und 1806 veröffentlichte er zahlreiche historisch-politische Schriften, die den Weg zu seiner bedeutenden Rolle ebneten. Ab 1809 verfasste er vor allem diplomatische Dokumente und war ein aktiver Briefeschreiber, dessen Korrespondenz Partner wie Rahel Varnhagen und Adam Heinrich Müller umfasste. Bis zu seinem Tod war Gentz auch im gesellschaftlichen Leben Wiens engagiert und pflegte Kontakte zu Politikern und Intellektuellen in ganz Europa. Seine Tagebücher, die hier erstmals mit einem Personenregister erschlossen werden, sind eine wertvolle Quelle zur politischen und kulturellen Geschichte Mitteleuropas im frühen 19. Jahrhundert. Die Reprintausgabe bietet eine umfassende Sammlung seiner Schriften, einschließlich der wichtigsten Publikationen bis 1806, Denkschriften und Briefen aus der von Gustav Schlesier 1838–1840 zusammengestellten Werkausgabe sowie ausgewählten Korrespondenzen.
