Grenzgänger zwischen Wissenschaft und Politik
Georg Eckert, a notable educator and historian, significantly contributed to the democratic renewal in teacher education and cultural policy in post-World War II Germany. He is particularly recognized for founding the Georg-Eckert-Institut in 1951, dedicated to international textbook research. This publication compiles contributions from a conference held in 2012 to celebrate his 100th birthday, organized by institutions influenced by his work, including the GEI, Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, Deutsche UNESCO-Kommission, and TU Braunschweig. The authors highlight key moments in Eckert’s life and his diverse, internationally impactful contributions. The book begins with a chapter detailing his life, followed by discussions of his efforts in fostering international understanding through bilateral textbook commissions and his role in the German UNESCO commission. Additionally, it examines his significant research on the history of social democracy, notably through the founding of the ‘Archiv für Sozialgeschichte’ (Social History Archive), a vital platform for social history research. The academic essays are enriched by contemporary accounts, offering a deeper, personal insight into Georg Eckert and his legacy.
