This collection is comprised of 35 critical articles as well as selected poems presented during the IV International Conference on the Hispanic Cultures of the United States. The symposium was organized by Renate von Bardeleben in cooperation with Juan Bruce-Novoa, Erlinda Gonzales-Berry and María Herrera-Sobek and held at the University of Mainz in Germersheim in 1990. Under the central theme of Gender, Self, and Society , the volume focuses on the intricate interplay of gender in the process of individuation and socialization. The spectrum of topics includes gender and genre theory, the writing of a gendered literary history, the poetic quest of men and women writers, sexual stereotyping in fiction, the emergence of the male/female self as man/woman and writer, interracial sexual relations, intergenerational gender relations, gender and the sense of place, the frontier heroine, the use of literary motifs and folkloric elements in female writings, the impact of the literary tradition and the crosscultural influence of gender concepts. The focus on gender unmasks subtle, submerged, and subversive developments in the interaction between the sexes in these traditionally male-oriented cultures. New light is shed on topics ranging from politics and sociology to literature, linguistics, and the arts.

In this collection of essays, Americanists from the United States, Germany, and Latvia enter the scholarly debate about the ever increasing pluralization of societies on the North American continent by correlating the issues of multiculturalism and ethnic survival. Spanning six centuries and covering the cultural work and literary representation of eight ethnic groups in the USA and Canada, the essays demonstrate that the scope of the debate has to be widened to reflect the complexity of a subject which has too long been reduced to convenient but simplistic binaries.

Theodore Dreiser (1871-1945), a key figure in American Naturalism and cultural life, has seen a resurgence of academic interest over the past thirty years. This revival, sparked by Richard Lingeman's comprehensive biography and supported by The Dreiser Edition, has led to a wealth of new scholarship. This volume gathers essays from a prominent international Dreiser scholar, Renate von Bardeleben, who has published on Dreiser since 1967 and contributed significantly to correcting the negative perceptions of his personality established by early biographers. Her work highlights overlooked aspects of Dreiser's complex life and writings, particularly emphasizing the importance of 'A Traveler at Forty' (1913) within his extensive body of work. Von Bardeleben's thorough examination of the history and various versions of this travel memoir culminated in the first unabridged edition of 'A Traveler' (Dreiser Edition, 2005). The collection aims to further the reevaluation of Dreiser as a classic of American literary modernism, showcasing the depth and breadth of his contributions to literature.
