Im Gegensatz zu anderen Kontinenten spielt Religion in Europa seit der Aufklärung eine zunehmend marginale Rolle im öffentlichen Leben, in Schulen, Wirtschaft und Politik. Für viele Europäer ist Religion heute eine Privatsache, die oft auch im privaten Bereich kaum noch Bedeutung hat. Religiöse Rituale und Orientierungen scheinen weitgehend der Vergangenheit anzugehören. Der Autor beleuchtet verschiedene Aspekte dieses einzigartigen Prozesses und untersucht den sprachlichen Umgang mit den Begriffen „Säkularisierung“, „Säkularismus“ und „Säkularisation“ sowie die politischen und kulturellen Prozesse, die damit verbunden sind. Ein zentraler Punkt der wissenschaftlichen Auseinandersetzung ist die Frage, wie im Zeitalter der Globalisierung eine vergleichende Religionsforschung im Sinne Max Webers durchgeführt werden kann. Zudem bleibt offen, ob die Säkularisierung in Europa nur eine vorübergehende Phase ist. Wird dieser Prozess weiter voranschreiten, und werden sich Kulturen anderer Kontinente langfristig an diesen Weg anpassen? Oder wird Europa sich wieder den religiös geprägten Kulturen annähern? In diesem Fall wäre die Säkularisierung nicht als Sonderweg Europas, sondern als eine weltgeschichtliche Episode zu betrachten.
Zwischen Anhängern des Jansenismus, des Quietismus und des Pietismus bestanden in der zweiten Hälfte des 17. Jahrhunderts und in der ersten Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts in Frankreich, der Schweiz und in Deutschland zahlreiche direkte und indirekte persönliche und literarische Verbindungen und Beziehungen. Außerdem sind bemerkenswerte strukturelle religiöse, soziale und kulturelle Ähnlichkeiten zu beobachten, aber auch aufschlussreiche Unterschiede zwischen diesen drei Bewegungen. Paths of Continuity examines the impact of the Third Reich on the German historical profession before and after 1945. The essays look at ten prominent historians whose lives and work spanned the period from the 1930s to the 1960s. Their response to the Nazi regime ranged from open resistance to willing collaboration. Ironically, however, much of the impetus for scholarly innovation after 1945 came from historians with earlier ties to the antiliberal "folk history" of the Nazi era. All in all, this insightful collection of essays provides fresh insight into the development of West German historical scholarship since 1945.
Although Weber's path-breaking work on the Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism has received much attention ever since it first appeared in 1904-5, recent research has uncovered important new aspects. This volume, the result of an international, interdisciplinary effort, throws new light on the intellectual and cultural background of Weber's work, debates recent criticism of Weber's thesis, and confronts new historical insight on the seventeenth century with Weber's interpretation. Revisiting Weber's thesis serves to deepen our understanding of Weber as much as it will stimulate further research.
The essays in An Interrupted Past describe the fate of those German-speaking historians who fled from Nazi Europe to the United States. Their story is set into several contexts: the traditional relationship between German and American historiography, the evolution of the German historical profession in the twentieth century, the onset of Nazi persecution after 1933, the special situation in Austria, and the difficulty of settling the refugees in their new homeland. In addition to articles on prominent scholars, there are accounts of the group as a whole, including information on more than ninety individuals, and of their family lives. An Interrupted Past is set in one of the darkest periods in human history, a time of political catastrophe and personal suffering. Yet the lives recorded here also illustrate people's capacity to survive, adjust, and create under difficult circumstances.
