Ani v jednom zo svojich románov sa Mór Jókai nesnažil tak verne opísať dobu, v ktorej sa rozvíja fabula jeho príbehu, ako v Novom zemepánovi. Postavy v románe naozaj všetky žili, boj sa skutočne odohral, všetko je pravda - aj jeho komickosť, aj tragickosť. Autorov praktický realizmus sa prejavil práve v tomto jeho najdiskutovanejšom románe. Az "ellenség" táborában Vilma szentimentális szerelme, és lassan hervadó élete mindössze egyetlen lényeges ponton találkozik Zoltánéval. A regény igazából két szempontból é az egyik a mellékalakok korhű, realisztikus és nagyon színes ábrázolása, a másik pedig néhány, a történelmi időszakra jellemző esemény megörökítése, például a követválasztás és főleg a pesti árvíz. Ez utóbbi a könyv kiemelkedően legszebb, megrázóan érdekes, érzékletes, patetikusságában is felemelő ré olyan irodalmi remeklés, melynek értékeire a Jókait ritkán olvasók figyelmét is fel kell hívni. Hát ennek az új mesterségnek a feltalálója akart lenni Ráby. Azért lett Rab Ráby. Bele is tört a kése. Tehát ennek a kornak a rajzát akarja feltüntetni az itt következő, nagyrészben igaz „história”. És csakugyan Jókainak sikerült Ráby Mátyás és a szentendrei urak összeütközésén át a feudális világ és a forradalom eszméinek előcsatárját ábrázolni. S ezen is túl egy tragikus magyar összeütközést: az idegen udvarból kiinduló reform és a nemzeti ellenállásba öltöző maradiság ellentétét.
