Die neuen Lebensstile, der Wandel und die Ausdifferenzierung des Wohnens sind wesentliche Teilphänomene urbaner Transformationen, die von der Stadt- und Wohnbauplanung neue Lösungen verlangen. In dieser Studie geht es um die Entwicklung einer neuen Sozial- und Kulturgeographie des Wohnens im urbanen Raum. Das Ziel ist die Erstellung eines neuen theoretischen und methodischen Forschungsrahmens sowie neuer inhaltlicher Fragestellungen für den Bereich der urbanen Wohnkultur. Die Wohnweisen, Wohnwünsche und Wohnvorstellungen der Jugendlichen stehen dabei im Vordergrund. Im theoretischen Teil werden die bisherigen Forschungsansätze kritisch überprüft und neue Forschungszugänge erschlossen. Im empirischen Teil geht es um die Vorstellungen der Jugendlichen über den gewünschten Wohnort, die präferierten Haus- und Wohnformen, die Wohnqualität (etwa die Größe der Wohnung, die Infrastruktur, die Lage und Verkehrserschließung), die Finanzierung dieser Wünsche und schließlich auch um die Vorstellungen der Jugendlichen hinsichtlich der zukünftigen Familien- und Arbeitsformen. Es geht um die Erfassung und Analyse der Wohnpräferenzen von Jugendlichen als eines kulturellen Phänomens im Rahmen der Aspekte Raum, Wohnen, Arbeiten, Freizeit, Mobilität, Konsum, Wohnleitbilder, Ideologie, Politik und Nachhaltigkeit. Eine historische Betrachtungsweise ist in diesem Zusammenhang unumgänglich. How young people in Vienna wish to live has rarely been examined because of the low social and political power this age group has in terms of living conditions in society. … New life styles and the transformation of and differentiation in housing conditions are essential phenomena of urban transformation and demand new solutions for urban and house-building planning. The aim of this project is to develop a new social and cultural geography of life in the urban space. The main aim of this study is the empirical coverage and analysis of young people's ideas on housing and their preferences as cultural and social phenomena. The theoretical section reviews previous research and develops a new theoretical and methodical research framework. The empirical section is about the various forms of housing occupied by young people at the moment. The first section sets out problems concerning their ideas on housing preferences, life-styles, location, size and age of accommodation. The second section discusses problems concerning young people's infrastructure preferences in their immediate environment as well as their living habits, including questions concerning mobility, work, shopping, leisure time and ecological aspects. The third group of problems deals with the legal aspects and the financing of the accommodation of their choice. The fourth group of topics inquires into the values and ideas of young people concerning the kind of family and work they would like to have in the future. Finally, the influence on housing construction of individual young people's preferences for certain ways of living is demonstrated.

Prefabricated housing estates are a vital part of Europe’s architectural and cultural heritage, introducing a new philosophy of urban and housing development. The connection between architecture and art in these residential estates, particularly in Vienna's prefabricated housing built in the late 20th century, has not been a focal point in architectural discourse. From the 1960s to the 1980s, Vienna saw the emergence of several large prefabricated housing estates, many adorned with various artworks. These artistic interventions included mural art on building facades and free-standing sculptures and fountains, with particular attention given to children's playground designs. Renowned Austrian artists such as Otto Beckmann, Wander Bertoni, and Erna Frank contributed to these estates. The relationship between art and architecture in these settings raises numerous unresolved questions in both theory and practice. This publication seeks to reassess this relationship within a broader context of urbanistic, social, artistic, and ideological issues. It explores theoretical questions about public art, the influence of the Athens Charter on post-war housing construction, and the role of the city of Vienna as a patron. It also examines commissioned artworks, artists' ambitions, themes, techniques, materials, and the residents’ reception of art within their architectural environment.

Ist der Plattenbau eine einfallslose, rein zweckmäßige Bauweise? Lange herrschte in der Architekturwelt eine kritische Einstellung gegenüber Architektur und Städtebau der Nachkriegszeit. Das Phänomen Plattenbausiedlung scheint ein polarisierendes Thema, das derzeit wieder intensiv diskutiert wird. Inwieweit entsprechen die Siedlungen noch den Anforderungen der gegenwärtigen Wohn- und Lebensweisen? Dieses Buch gibt Einblicke in bautechnische, architektonische, gestalterische, soziale, wohnbaupolitische sowie umweltbezogene Aspekte des Plattenbaus in Wien und Bratislava. Untersucht werden neben den Möglichkeiten einer umfassenden Erneuerung auch bereits durchgeführte Sanierungsmaßnahmen und zentrale Forschungsansätze wie Niedrigenergie- und Passivhausprojekte. Fragen der aktuellen Wohnbaupolitik der Slowakei werden ebenso besprochen wie die rechtlichen und finanziellen Rahmenbedingungen und die Rolle der Gemeinden. Perspektiven und entsprechender Handlungsbedarf werden hierbei auch aus einer Befragung zweier Wiener Wohnsiedlungen abgeleitet. Abschließend werden anhand des Pilotprojekts »Umfassende Sanierung eines Wohnblocks in Bratislava- Petrzalka« konkrete Sanierungsvorschläge präsentiert.

The object of the study is to analyse the interconnections between the regional industry, service and research structure in the metropolitan region of Vienna and the background conditions for innovatory activities within a regional innovation system. As a means of achieving a quantitative and qualitative assessment of the potential for innovation, industrial enterprises were asked in a written poll about their own research activities and innovation-oriented relationships with other major players (production service providers, research facilities, other industrial enterprises, i. e. purchasers, suppliers, and competitors) in and around region. In this way, it has been possible to create a unique data basis which can be used to make a substantial contribution to quantifying innovation networks and to clarifying regional innovation processes.
