Philo lived and wrote as a Jew in the centre of Hellenistic culture of his time, namely in Alexandria. His works give extensive insights into the synthesis of Hellenistic and Jewish thoughts in the 1st century. The treatise entitled “Every good man is free” deals with the old philosophical question, how true freedom can be achieved and what it means to be free. According to the Stoic opinion only the “wise” man is free. Philo’s treatise is not only of historical interest, but may give impulses to modern readers engaged in religious and philosophical questions. Reinhard von Bendemann provides an introduction and a new translation.
Der jüdische Schriftsteller Philo von Alexandrien (gest. ca. 50 n. Chr.) hinterließ ein umfangreiches Werk in griechischer Sprache, das bibelexegetische und philosophische Abhandlungen umfasst. In dem kleinen Traktat „Das Leben eines Politikers oder über Josef“ verbindet er beide Bereiche. Philo bietet eine philosophische Nacherzählung der biblischen Josefsgeschichte, in der Josef als hellenistischer Herrscher erscheint. Die Nacherzählung wird durch drei Exkurse ergänzt, die lose mit dem Haupttext verknüpft sind und sich mit dem Ethos und Selbstverständnis des Politikers in einer antiken, demokratischen Polis befassen. So entsteht eine staatsphilosophische Schrift, die die beiden Typen des antiken Politikers behandelt: den Herrscher über ein Territorium und den Beamten, der sich mit Justiz und Verwaltung beschäftigt. Philos Josefsschrift ist das einzige antike Werk, das diese beiden Politikersorten gleichzeitig thematisiert und leistet damit einen bedeutenden Beitrag zur antiken politischen Philosophie. Die einzige deutsche Übersetzung stammt aus dem Jahr 1909. Lang bietet eine ausführliche Einleitung, ein Glossar philonischer Grundbegriffe, eine neue, lesbare Übersetzung sowie den ersten Kommentar zu diesem Werk.
