Desde os tempos de Leiria, percorre o país de lés a lés, registando as paisagens, os monumentos, os modos de falar, os sabores do pão e do vinho, a feição das gentes. Em finais dos anos 40 viaja de automóvel com um amigo igualmente entusiasta, Fernando Valle Teixeira, cuja família tem casa na Quinta da Raposeira, em Lamego. As férias em Trás-os-Montes, a caça, as idas anuais às termas do Gerês são também meios de conhecer palmo a palmo, com «uma erudição adquirida pelos pés», os socalcos do Douro, a povoação mais remota, a capelinha românica abandonada, o castro em ruínas, as fragas mais altas da Calcedónia. Em 1950 publica o livro "Portugal", uma «invenção de Portugal» (na fórmula feliz de um crítico francês) que é a expressão dessa aprendizagem, dessa decifração e dessa compreensão da pátria.
