Dieser Sammelband zu Gottfried Keller würdigt den 150. Jahrestag der Publikation des ersten Bandes der Leute von Seldwyla und berücksichtigt die neue historisch-kritische Ausgabe von Kellers Werken, herausgegeben unter der Leitung von Walter Morgenthaler (2000). Der Band enthält zwölf Beiträge von elf Autoren, die den Novellenzyklus aus verschiedenen Perspektiven beleuchten. Schwerpunkte der interdisziplinären Studie sind Kellers philosophische Position, seine Ansichten zur Schweizer Ökonomie, Pädagogik und politischen Tagesfragen der Zeit. Etwa die Hälfte der Beiträge behandelt einzelne Novellen wie Kleider machen Leute, Die mißbrauchten Liebesbriefe und Das verlorene Lachen, während weitere Aufsätze Kellers Realismus und Erzähltechnik gewidmet sind. Diese Analyse richtet sich an Gelehrte der deutschen Literatur und diskutiert den Einfluss deutscher Philosophie (Feuerbach, Vischer) auf Kellers Werk sowie dessen Interesse an Wirtschaft, Bildung und dem politischen Leben in der Schweiz. Zudem werden Kellers zwei Vorreden zu den Novellen thematisiert und zentrale Aspekte wie sein Realismus und seine narrative Technik behandelt.

In 1848 the continent of Europe was rocked by revolutions: only Great Britain and Russia remained relatively immune to the upheaval. Most spectacularly, the Revolutions swept across the German-speaking lands of central Europe, with the newly-released forces of nationalism and mass popular protest smashing the reactionary Metternich regimes which had held sway since the defeat of Napoleon. The Metternich system was dead: nationalism and national self-determination asserted themselves as the dominant dynamic forces of continental Europe in the later nineteenth century.
