In diesem informativen Buch reflektieren die Architektinnen und Architekten von gmp über ihre vielfältigen Erfahrungen aus über einem Vierteljahrhundert Bauaktivität in Italien. gmp gehört zu den größten deutschen Architekturbüros mit über 500 Beschäftigten an sieben Standorten weltweit und war vor über 25 Jahren erstmals in Italien tätig. Ihr Engagement begann mit der Ausstellung „Renaissance der Bahnhöfe“ für die Architekturbiennale in Venedig 1996 und setzte sich 1997 mit den neuen Messehallen in Rimini fort. Von 1997 bis 2023 plante das Büro insgesamt 60 Projekte, darunter Messebauten, Bahnhöfe, Flughäfen, Stadien und die Denkfabrik Tecnopolo in Bologna. In sieben Kapiteln wird die Geschichte dieser Projekte erzählt und in den historischen Kontext der jeweiligen Standorte eingeordnet. Ein Interview mit Gründungspartner Volkwin Marg gibt Einblicke in seine Begeisterung für die italienische Baukultur, große Erfolge sowie die Herausforderungen und Enttäuschungen, die er erlebte. Großformatige Abbildungen, Pläne und historische Referenzen ergänzen die Erzählung.

Jérôme Brunet und Eric Saunier gehören zu den profiliertesten Architekten der Gegenwart in Frankreich. Mit der Banque de France in Montpellier oder dem Wohnungsbau an der Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris bekräftigen sie ihre Position an der Spitze einer kontextuellen Architektur. Architekten von Gerkan, Marg und Partner (gmp), with more than 500 employees at seven locations in Germany, China, and Vietnam, is a world-leading architectural firm, as well as being one of Germany’s largest. In 1996 gmp realized its first project in Italy: the exhibition Renaissance of Railway Stations that was part of the 6th International Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennale. In 1997 gmp’s winning design for the new exhibition halls in Rimini marked the beginning of its list of another 59 projects in the country, comprising diverse structures such as train stations, airports, stadiums, hospitals, or research buildings. Many of these were for sites of historical significance that required the utmost sensitivity in execution; 13 of them have actually been realized to date. This book tells the story of gmp’s work in Italy in seven chapters, placing all projects in the historical context of their respective location. In an interview, Volkwin Marg, one of gmp’s two founding partners, talks about his experiences, his enthusiasm for Italy’s building culture, gmp’s great successes, unexpected major obstacles, tough negotiations, and deep disappointments. Numerous color photographs, plans, and historical reference images supplement the texts.

Berlin expects that the new embassy buildings of France, Great Britain, the United States and Switzerland will be built at the turn of the millenium. The former Allies thus return to their pre-war addresses by the Brandenburg Gate, in the heart of the city. The Swiss embassy, in the immediate vicinity, will be expanded and converted. These plans are complemented by the new Foreign Office of the Federal Republic of Germany, which will be erected at the former Schlossplatz opposite the "Altes Museum" by Karl Friedrich Schinkel. These representational projects were decided upon in international competitions, drawing the participation of a particularly illustrious group of architects. All the documented entries had to respond to an intricate question: "How can and should a nation be represented in a contemporary and appropriate fashion?" All the competitions and entries are chronicled comprehensively in this book, including numerous model photos and original drawings.
