This volume presents papers from the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Emergent Computing Methods in Engineering Design, held in Nafplio, Greece, from August 25-27, 1994. It brings together around thirty researchers from various countries, including Canada, France, Germany, Greece, Israel, Taiwan, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and the USA, to explore the application of emergent computing methods such as genetic algorithms, neural networks, and simulated annealing in engineering design. The content is organized into three parts, each featuring both theoretical and practical papers. The first part, the largest, focuses on genetic algorithms and evolutionary computing, discussing improvements to methodologies and specific engineering applications. The second part centers on neural networks, covering their use as approximation tools in design, adaptation in control systems, and theoretical interpretation issues. The third part includes papers on diverse topics, such as the combined use of genetic algorithms and neural networks, simulated annealing techniques, problem decomposition, and the computer recognition and interpretation of emerging objects in engineering design.
