The internationalization of research and technology significantly influences global trade, economic development, and public policies. While some aspects of this trend are documented and quantifiable, the overall processes remain complex and outcomes uncertain. The phenomenon is accepted, yet its significance and trends spark ongoing debate. This study on new approaches in drug development is part of a three-year project examining the implementation of innovative industrial knowledge creation in the innovation systems of the U.S. and Germany. The project focuses on case studies of innovation practices across various national and sectoral contexts. Key sectors explored include pharmaceuticals and drug development by the Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research, advanced materials by the University of Hohenheim, financial services and home banking by MIT's Center for Industrial Performance and Sloan School of Management. The project receives financial support from the German-American Academic Council, the German Federal Ministry of Education, Science Research and Technology, and the Fraunhofer Society.
