Hepatitis B and C virus infections are still a major public health problem; there are approximately 500 million HBV and 200 million HCV carriers worldwide. This special issue of Intervirology presents articles on a newly developed range of vaccines against these widespread viruses, including new recombinant HBV vaccines, recent varieties of recombinant core particles and also DNA vaccines, which have been developed over the last 10 years but not yet been tested in larger animals and humans.
