The symposium „Ancient Roads in Greece. Proceedings of a Symposion Organized by the Cultural Association Aigeas (Athens) and the German Archaeological Institute (Athens) with the Support of the German School at Athens, November 23, 1998“ was organized with the goals of the constitution of the Aegeas Cultural Association. One of its objectives was the preservation and official recognition of the ancient road to Sounion. Current literature on the subject of ancient roads is scanty. Often, very little is known about them from the archaeological record, and comparisons drawn from their modern counterparts are misleading. The ancient road's main characteristic, one which constantly fascinates the traveler, was its close connection with the environment - a relaxing landscape, a well with sweet water near at hand, a beautiful plane tree, the ruins of ancient cities, quarries, temples, and mines. Their legacy to us is this great sense of history. By way of its current initiative the board and members of the Aegeas Cultural Association have attempted to bring this legacy to public attention and to underscore the importance of protecting and preserving this cultural and environmental heritage.
