Scientific engineering of distributed Java applications

FIDJI 2003 was an international forum for researchers and practitioners focused on advancements in software engineering for distributed application development, particularly emphasizing Java-related technologies. The workshop provided a platform for presenting and observing the latest research and ideas in these fields. All submitted papers underwent review by at least two members of the International Program Committee, with acceptance based on originality and contribution. From 29 submissions, 14 papers, two tutorials, and one keynote talk were selected for the post-workshop proceedings. The event aimed to promote a scientific approach to software engineering, covering topics such as the design of distributed Java applications, software and system architecture, UML development methodologies, and component-based development. It also addressed managing evolution and inconsistencies during various development phases, dependability support throughout system life-cycles, atomicity and exception handling, and the integration of formal techniques in development processes. Additional topics included security requirements for distributed applications, refactoring methods, and case studies from both industry and academia. Organizing such a workshop involved significant effort.
