This book introduces Geographic Hypermedia, a new paradigm at the intersection of Geographic Information Science and hypermedia technology. Both fields are rapidly evolving, and the concept originated in 2004 when the editors organized a workshop at the annual 'Hypertext' conference. The workshop aimed to explore the application of hypermedia concepts in geographical contexts and was later held with the Maps and the Internet Commission of the International Cartographic Association during the Association of American Geographers meeting in Denver in April 2005. The event successfully gathered multidisciplinary researchers and professionals in Geographic Hypermedia, with participants from four continents sharing their insights and work. This collaboration resulted in a collection of extended papers and invited chapters, culminating in twenty-five chapters in this volume. While Geographic Hypermedia is still developing, this book aims to provide a contemporary overview of its progress and status, fostering further discussion and research within the scientific community.
