Information technology and climate change

Mehr zum Buch

In contemporary times, climate change arises from both natural and human influences on a global scale, leading to an interactive future shaped by two complex, non-linear systems. Advances in satellite observation and information technology may empower humanity to tackle the challenges posed by potentially rapid climate change. A 2007 report by an expert group for the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development emphasizes that social systems must focus on "avoiding the unmanageable and managing the unavoidable." Information and Communication Technology (ICT) plays a crucial role in response management by offering feedback loops and regulatory systems. It can directly contribute to solutions by facilitating remote communication, thereby reducing carbon footprints associated with travel. An international conference on IT and climate change took place at FHTW Berlin on September 25/26, 2008, gathering academics, researchers, and practitioners interested in environmental informatics and climate change. This event provided a platform for networking, exchanging research ideas, and sharing best practices. Authors were invited to submit original, unpublished works addressing various aspects of ICT's role in combating climate change, including environmental data management and the potential of ICT for mitigating human-induced climate change.
