The Operation Primer series began with a scientific study titled “Mental Training in Surgical Education,” part of a collaborative project involving the surgical department of the University of Cologne, the Institute of Sports and Sports Sciences of the University of Heidelberg, and the European Surgical Institute in Norderstedt. This study aimed to assess the impact of mental training, a technique effective in elite sports for years, on surgical education. To adapt mental training for surgical contexts, modifications were necessary, leading to the creation of the first Operation Primer, which influenced the final versions presented today. Over the past two years, five Operation Primers have been released, covering various surgical procedures: Laparoscopic Sigmoidectomy for Cancer, Laparoscopic Sigmoidectomy for Diverticulitis, Thyroidectomy with Harmonic FOCUS, Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy, and Stapled Transanal Rectal Resection with Contour Transtar Curved Cutter Stapler Procedure Set. The sixth installment focuses on Laparoscopic Total Mesorectal Excision for Cancer. The response has been overwhelmingly positive, with encouraging feedback from around the globe. The series has been translated into multiple languages, and there have been requests for additional specialties beyond general and visceral surgery.
