Wolfgang Mattheuer (1927–2004), a prominent figure of the “Leipzig School,” was a painter, sculptor, and printmaker who participated in significant art exhibitions in the GDR and gained recognition in the West, particularly with his contribution to documenta 6 in Kassel. His works began appearing in West German museums, but the largest collection of his graphic art is housed in Chemnitz. Following the acquisition of Hartmut Koch's private collection, the Kunstsammlungen now holds nearly the complete graphic oeuvre of Mattheuer, which includes almost 900 sheets with over 400 motifs. Many of these works inspired his paintings. This catalogue showcases the collection through large-scale illustrations and scholarly essays, revealing Mattheuer’s pictorial world, which is consistently figurative yet often enigmatic. His creations span six decades and include etchings, lithographs, woodcuts, and lino-cuts, illustrating the depth and complexity of his artistic vision.
