The objective of this project is to develop a simulation model for the analysis of the performance of urban traffic networks using Deterministic Stochastic Timed Petri Nets (DSTPN). The model was built in a general way so that changes to an intersection, and the analysis of different types of intersections, can be easily supported. Factors considered in the model include the physical characteristics of an intersection, such as the number of lanes in each direction, and the turning classification of each lane (e. g. straight or for turn only). The arrival process of vehicles to the intersection, the departure process from the conflict area, the traffic signal control strategy used in controlling traffic flow and the dynamic behaviour of traffic at the phase sequence period are the main parts of the model.
