1957. When the Communist Party claims a small village in Eastern Europe for the Soviet Union, Pavel Botev's teacher mysteriously commits suicide and Pavel resolves to piece together her broken heart to find out how it broke in the first place. Meanwhile, crackled radio reports of the US-Soviet space race keep the villagers occupied; when the statue of the Virgin Mary is stolen from the chapel, Pavel's grandfather assumes that the Russians have kidnapped it and sent it to the moon.
