The Digital Transformation of the Firm

The pervasiveness and continuing development of digital technologies in both social and business settings increases the pressure on firms to expand their digital transformation efforts. In order to keep up with a changing consumer demand, the introduction of cutting edge technologies, and the rise of tough competitors, corporations must constantly enhance, reinvent, or even replace profitable products and services. This dissertation aims to analyze how firms govern their digital transformation strategies and processes and to investigate the outcome of successful transformation. Furthermore, the most important organizational drivers and barriers of the introduction of an innovative technology are investigated to guide firms in their endeavor of digital transformation. These goals are achieved with three research projects combining several rigorous scientific methods to answer the follow-ing, overall research question: How do firms govern their digital transformation, what are the organizational enablers and barriers, and what are the outcomes of this transformation?
