Christoph, the son of the renowned Baroque composer Johann Melchior Molter, abandons his unsatisfying studies and embarks on a restless journey to Diefenorth, his father's hometown. Along the way, he is rescued from an attack by a mysterious black-haired boy in the impoverished Rhön region. In Diefenorth, Christoph finds his footing, fueled by his love for the beautiful pastor's daughter, Veronika. He secures a position in the local administration and marries her. Meanwhile, the black-haired boy, later known as Rhön-Paulus, grows up in dire circumstances, born out of wedlock. As a young man, he becomes entangled with military recruiters and the chaos of the Seven Years' War, ultimately deserting to roam his beloved Rhön and joining a band of salt smugglers. Unexpectedly, he receives help from Christoph, who has since found success. The narrative unfolds in the 18th century, set in a region surrounded by the Duchy of Meiningen and part of the Duchy of Eisenach-Weimar in western Thuringia. Through a blend of historical context and fictional storytelling, the lives of Christoph, Rhön-Paulus, and Melchior Molter intertwine, highlighting their connections to the region and each other. Melchior, born in Tiefenort in 1696, rises from humble beginnings to become a respected composer and court conductor. Christoph, driven by restlessness, embarks on a perilous journey back to his father's roots.
