Long-time serviceability is an important problem for concrete construction, as concrete structures can suffer from excessive deflections, cracking, corrosion or other impairments, the causes of which often involve concrete creep and shrinkage. The damage and residual stresses produced by creep and shrinkage effects may reduce the safety margin against the ultimate collapse state under live load. Therefore, improvements in the design of concrete structures are an important objective of research.
