This work addresses the two-way relay communication problem with focus on the coding and implementation aspects. The performance of repeat-accumulate codes in the presence of side information is analyzed and used for building channel codes for different relaying methods in the broadcast phase of the two-way relay channel. Different decode-forward coding schemes are presented and compared for asymmetric channel configurations. Extensions to multi-way relaying problems are investigated and methods for building good codes are proposed. For quantize-forward relaying, both separated and joint decoders are discussed, their performance is evaluated, and a method for designing channel codes for the broadcast phase is proposed. Similarly, several memoryless relaying methods are discussed and their performance for different channel configurations is evaluated. Finally, the design and implementation details of a decode-forward based satellite communication system are presented and a performance evaluation of the developed prototypes is summarized.
